Metal Method - Assignments
- Stage 3 Solo
- Recorded 2007/07/28:
- All guitar parts done with a 2004
Jackson Soloist (SLATQH).
These are no longer available as production-run guitars; see the
SL2HT as the nearest equivalent.
- Rhythm guitar parts played straight through a Tube-Works 6130
combo amplifier (these were made by Genz Benz, and sound great, but
are unfortunately no longer available), miked with a small-diaphragm
condensor microphone (Behringer B-5) with an omni-directional capsule.
It's an unorthodox way to mic a guitar amp, but it was a worthwhile
experiment.
- Lead guitar is played through a Roland GP8 (is it just me, or is all
my favorite gear out of production???), into a Hughes &
Kettner Attax 100 head, and a Marshall (1960AV) slant-front
"vintage" 4x12, miked with a Sennheiser e835 dynamic mic.
(I don't own an SM57, which would be more typical, but I find I like
the e835 a lot for recording distorted electric guitars.)
- Bass is a Yamaha RBX350, with a direct feed from the pre-amp of a
Genz Benz GBE 100 combo bass amp.
- Drums are courtesy of an old Sequential Circuits Drumtraks drum
machine. I left them dry, but perhaps shouldn't have done that.
- Each instrument was recorded and mixed with
Ardour multi-tracking software.
- Effects were recorded with the guitar signals: a warm hall reverb
(from the Tube Works 6130 built-in digital effects processor) for
the rhythm guitars, and digital delay (from the Roland GP-8) for the
lead guitar. The bass had a small amount of compression (from the
plugin library available for
LADSPA) applied during mixdown,
as did the overall mix.
